First Things First:
This section is a very basic overview:
Choose a Game Master (G.M.) who will run and guide the adventure for a group. The GM will:
1. Present situations.
2. Act out the part of all NPCs (non-player characters).
3. Give histories.
4. Keep important information recorded.
5. Create "house rules".
6. Keep the balance of the game (adjusting encounters so they are not 100% overwhelming to players).
As the GM, it will be your job to adjust everything in the game, creating a sense of balance.
Adventures:
An adventure can be created beforehand (like a module), or the books can be randomly followed to naturally mold an adventure. Guardians of Utaemia (GOU) is designed to randomly create regions and continental borders, eventually mapping out an entire world structure. This is strictly up to the GM as he or she sees fit.
The GM will learn how to look up information.
Most of GOU is reference material, and does not need to be learned.
The books DO NOT have to be read all the way through to be understood.
Only the CREATING THE CHARACTER book needs to be followed all the way through. It is a process as follows:
1. A step-by-step character creation process.
2. Gives references (links) on how to get started after the character creation process.
3. All other books are resources and tools to aid and enhance game-play.
Each player will need:
1. Calculator - : A simple math calculator will do).
2. Dice ---------- : A full set of gaming dice. You will need the following:
One or more - D4
One or more - D6
One or more - D8
Two or more - D10 (not the same color)
One or more - D12
One or more - D20
One or more - D30 (the D30 is used in GOU)
Dice can be purchased at your local gaming/hobby shop.
Gaming Mat: One gaming mat with a 1" graphs is the best to use ..... (hexagon and octagon will work, but the graph style mat is true to the mechanics of this game. Note: Chessex makes excellent mats, and you can order them online (I don't have any business affiliation with Chessex. I"m a customer also.
Miniatures: Miniatures that will represent you or a creature during game-play (also found at local gaming shops). These can get expensive if you buy a lot. I like to plan and budget some money to go out onto auction house sites and buy used ones in bulk.
Pencil and Eraser: A .5mm pencil with a clicker eraser.
Paper: Used for keeping notes and for scratch paper (I find the spiral notebooks for school are great for this, as you can turn to any of the pages and still keep the notebook flat on the table. I have one for each adventure I host. They are my growing library of notes. You can also use notepad on windows to create a cost-effective library. I keep a lot of notes in my notepad files.
Each player will need:
The decision as to where the adventure will begin must be decided.
It is wise to begin all players in the CIVILIZATION Setting within the "Grasslands Region" (lowest level creatures exist here). I've also imbellished on the Grasslands, creating a sense of how to play the others regions, filling them with content.
Game Masters are world builders:
- They KEEP TRACK OF ... ALL ... INFORMATION presented.
- If you don't, you WILL end up debating content later.
- This detracts from, and can ruid, the adventure.
- Questions? Open up the BASIC RULES BOOK and look up the ruling you would like to see. If you cannot find a ruling on a question you have, please email me at:
Selman - 24777 - at - jee male dot - com.
Notice how I spelled out my email address? ::wink wink:: It's a nice safeguard against invaders, if you get my meaning. in the SUBJECT line, please put - GOU question, or GOU feedback (something like that, but always GOU). That way I can spot it quick and respond. I'm not a stranger; I'm Michael Giles. I live in Salt Lake City. I love hosting games for people who would like to try it out for free. I'm not shy about gathering at a local gaming shop and showing you the ropes (so you can understand and run a campaign with Guardians of Utaemi (GOU).
LAST thoughts:
- The Creating the Character Book is the ONLY book you need to start from top to bottom.
- It is not alphabetical order by subject.
- This book evolves as I add more content into the process of creating a character, or any other book.
See: "UPDATES".
HAPPY ADVENTURING ALL!!
